Custom Birds Eye Maple Round Cribbage Board

This request is being made for a group of Navy Submariners to be given as a retirement gift. The lasered image is an impression of Neptune. It was created using an Northern Lights Engraving on an Epilog laser machine.

It was created using a circular design with 14 inch diameter and a four track layout. Storage is provided with a slot on the back of the board.

Birdseye Maple was the wood of choice and really works up nice.
Once completed it was finished with a hand rubbed polyurethane coat.

Just because I have already been asked, I asked the client and this is the answer to the question on the bottom of the board.

Custom Hard Maple/Oak Slide Out Cutting Board

This custom cutting board was created to replace the old worn out one and is on its way to Washington State to its new home.

It slides into the counter top for storage and has fingers pulls on each side opposite ends so it can be flipped and used both ways. It can also be pulled out for use on the counter or somewhere else.

The center portion is made using hard maple with oak being used for the breadboard ends. Breadboard ends help keep the board flat and add color.

The measurements are: 17 3/4" wide x 24 1/2" long, and 3/4" thick. Once completed a food grade mineral oil is applied to preserve the wood.

Custom Made Over-sink Cutting Board

This board was created out of hard maple and cut to the specific requests of the client. 18 1/8 inches long and 15 5/8 inches wide. It was designed to fit on top of an under counter mounted sink. The angled corners were created to make it easy to flip the board. The curved cut out on the upper corner was cut to make it easy to clear the board.

This large four person cribbage board was created for a client to make cribbage easier to play for some older folks.

It was created out of Dark Walnut and measures in at 10 inches wide and 30 inches long. The holes were drilled to hold the 2 1/2 inch custom metal pegs for the 1/4 inch holes. Storage is provided on the back for the pegs.

Custom Ash With Walnut Legs Foot Stool

This custom foot stool was made for a client in Illinois. It has tapered legs and measures in around 14 inches long, 10 inches wide, 2 inches thick with 8 inch legs.
The top was made out of Ash with the legs out of Dark Walnut. Several coats of finish were applied to give it a nice protective finish.

Custom Six Person Large Walnut/Oak Cribbage Board

Comments received from client after opening the package.

Poly/wax finish being applied....

This giant custom six person cribbage board has been delivered to its new home in Pennsylvania in time for their family Christmas gathering.

The three coats of hand rubbed poly/wax finish has been applied and are now in the final drying process. Once that is completed I will begin the buffing and final finishing steps. This has been a very long process, but one which will pay off in the long run for the client. I am sure he and his family will have many spirited games on this board.

It was requested to create a way of hanging this custom piece on the wall when not in place. So I created this four inch keyhole slot on the back to safely hang the board straight on the wall. I hope they choose their spot well, because this is one heavy board and will need to be hung on a wall stud.

The inlays have all been done and we are now into creating the slots on the back to hold the custom pegs. Then I can move on to the sanding and finish stage.

This creation is a combination of other boards, furniture style in their home and the desire to have a board that his whole family can play on.

Custom 18 Inch Personalized Pizza Peel

This custom pizza peel is being shipped directly to Virginia as a Christmas present from the client. Hope it makes it on time, if not Merry Christmas Tom, this peel is for you.

It was created out of birch and has an 18 inch x 18 inch peel with a 18 inch handle and will be used on an outside grill.

The custom lasered initials were done using an Epilog laser system.

Received these comments from client when package was open:

This request came from Southern California for this large cutting board. It is on it's way to it's new home.

Made out of Hard Maple this board measures in at 24 inches long , 18 inches wide, and 1 1/2 inches thick. Rubber feet were put on the bottom to protect whatever it might be sitting on.
The lasered image is the Croatia Coat of Arms and was done using a Epilog laser system.

Sanding has been finished and oil applied.

The connection to the state of Vermont generated the idea for this custom cribbage board. This four person board was created out of maple and finished with a hand rubbed polyurethane finish.
The personalized lasering of the initials on the bottom was done using an Epilog laser.

Custom Lobster Shaped Cribbage Board.

Catching lobster is this guys job along the East Coast. The design had to be under 16 inches in length because of their space requirements.Therefore I had to create a half track to make this board work. With a half track one must go around twice in order to peg out the standard 121 peg holes.
This lobster was made out of hard maple and finished with a hand rubbed polyurethane.
The size restriction required that some of the interior lines be taken out to insert the track.

This board was created out of Maple and measures in at around 22 inches long, 8 inches wide and 2 3/8 inches thick.

It is a four person board and comes with custom metal standard size 1/8 inch pegs and a deck of cards. Each track is separated by a routed line to make it easy for players to stay on their own track. A hand rubbed polyurethane finish has been applied to protect the board.

Custom Sloop Cribbage Board.

This request came in from a client in Massachusetts and it is sailing away to its home port. The idea was started during a vacation last summer for the client and she thought it would be the perfect Christmas gift for her husband.
I was given a photo with very general specifications and asked "Can you create something like this?" How can I say no to a challenge like that?
After narrowing down the type of sailboat; International One Design, I created the shape design and I was off.

The boat measures in at 20 inches long 5 1/2 inches at the widest point and 2 1/2 inches deep. The main deck is Dark Walnut and the two bottom layers are birch.
As you can see from the photos below, they were shaped, then glued together..then shaped further as was necessary.
This project was a really fun one to plan out and create. I think it turned out very well.

Custom Thomas the Train Table

Another young man will have many fun times playing on his new Thomas the Train table this Christmas.
Constructed out of pine, the table stands 18 inches off the floor. The playing surface measures 32 inches wide by 48 inches long and is made out of 1/4 MDF.

Custom Hard Maple Cutting Board Slide Out With Oak Pull

This large cutting board is on its way to Vacaville, California to its new home. This client is doing a major redo in his house. After working on updating the cabinets in the kitchen, he decided to also do the cutting board slideouts. During a google search he found me and placed this order.

The board measures in at 1/2 inch thick x 25 inches wide x 23 7/16 inch deep and was made out of hard maple. The breadboard front of the board was made using red oak 1/2 inch thick. 1 1/2 inches wide and 27 inches long. The extra two inches was to keep the board from sliding into the slot. Both sides of the oak got finger grooves routed into them for ease of pulling it out during use.

This custom two person cribbage board has headed to Birmingham, Alabama as a gift for Christmas.
It was made out of maple with a walnut strip and measures in around 8 inches wide and 16 inches long.
The client chose the laser engraving on the walnut strip "War Eagle".
I was able to find some maple that had the chocolate color the client wanted. It really turned out nice.

Custom 18 Inch Pizza Peel

It is a 18 inch x 18 inch with a 22 inch handle. It is made our of a local birch and is 3/8 inch thick.

Peel is glued up and shaped except for the bottom curve. I need a square end to put into the laser machine when we do the logo.

From Las Vegas, Nevada came the request for this design. Initially the board was going to be smaller, however once I laid the three person track out and the design provided by the client it became a much larger board.

This custom board measures in 18 inches wide and 23 inches tall. Cherry wood was the wood of choice.

Shape and lettering has been cut using a CNC Shopbot router system.

This client came to me looking for a quality product which could serve as a trophy and also be functional, and they wanted them to be custom made in the USA. I am thankful they found and chose me to create their trophy's for this years event. I think they will be very pleased with their product.

The boards are being created out of 7/4 hard maple and will be finished using a food grade mineral oil.

Two first place trophies with handle, logo, lettering, and juice groove. 24 inches long x 18 inches wide.

Two second place trophies with handle, logo and lettering 18 inches long x 12 wide.

Six smaller boards with logo and and juice groove to be handed out at the event. These boards were 12 inch long x 8 inch wide

The different colors are because they came from different pieces of wood.

Ag Fest is an Agricultural Festival that includes a large trade show held at the DeSoto County Turner Agri-Civic Center in Arcadia, Florida

Custom Four Person Dark Walnut Box Style Cribbage Board

This custom box style cribbage board was made for a client in Massachusetts as a birthday present for their brother. The chosen wood was dark walnut and they wanted me to use a piece of wood with a lot of grain pattern in it and then top it with a hand rubbed satin finish to allow the grain to show through. I think the wood I chose meets that request well and turned out awesome.

Dimensions for this project were 16 inches long x 8 inches wide and 2 inches thick. The bottom section was the same size and had pockets created to hold a deck of cards and the custom metal pegs that come with each custom board.

Custom Maple and Oak Pull-out Cutting Board

This custom slide out cutting board was created for a client to replace their old one.

It measures in at 5/8 inch thick, 17 7/8 inches wide, and 24 inches long. I used hard maple for the center cutting surface and oak for the breadboard ends. The ends purpose are twofold, one to add to the look and two to help keep the board flat.

Once the board was finished I apply several coats of a food grade mineral oil to help preserve it.

Custom finger groove on bottom side to aid in pulling out of cabinet slot.

Glued up and ready for edges to be rounded over, finger grooves cut, and sanded.

Custom "Wolf Dream" Three Person Triangle Cribbage Board

Custom 12 Inch Pizza Peel for Glacier Grill and Pizza

Finished custom 12 inch Birch pizza peel with 18 inch long handle.

As is typical with my peels, the peel is shaped to around 1/8 inch thick on the bottom with a beveled edge. The top of the peel is around 3/16th inch thick and the handle is left as thick as possible to provide strength and support when using the peel.

Each peel is individually shaped and molded to meet specific requirements for each peel.

Custom Oak Cribbage Board with Inlayed Walnut and Bloodwood Strips

This Custom Two Person Cribbage Board was created using Oak for the wider sides and strips of walnut and bloodwood for the inlayed center. As you can see the wood grain and colors go well together. It measures in at 6 1/2 inches wide, 17 inches long and 1 inch thick.

This Large custom four person cribbage board has made its way to its new home in Denver, Colorado as a retirement gift.
The board was made out of dark walnut and roughly measured in at 32 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 15/16 inch thick. It was accompanied with custom 3/16 inch metal pegs and a deck of cards.

This custom cribbage is being created for the Klondike Challenge in Washington State. It was made out of Cherry and is 8 inches wide and 18 inches long.

Custom Air Force Cribbage Board Design

This custom design was re-created as a retirement gift for this clients husband. After seeing one like it created several years ago, she thought it was the perfect gift.

It is being created out of maple with the inlays being cut out of walnut. This board measures in at 12 1/2 inches wide and 12 1/2 inches tall and is almost 1 inch thick.

The finished custom cribbage board is on its way to Mississippi for it's special retirement ceremony.

Slot on left for holding custom pegs and key hole slot in center to hang it, and personal inscription below.

Once the inlays were completed the track was laid out and drilled. There also was a keyhole slot added on the back for displaying the board when not being played.

This is a large 4 person cribbage board measuring in at around 30 inches long and 12 inches wide... It was created using a piece of Gummy Cherry wood.

It is now on its way to its new home in Honoluliu, Hawaii.

Custom Chile Pepper Cribbage Board

This order was placed for someone just entering the fourth grade. Where cribbage is used as one way of improving your math scores.

The board measures in at around 12 inches long and 4 inch wide. I used a chili colored stain to give the red color and the stem I inlayed a piece of greenish popular wood. The board was then given a hand rubbed poly finish.

Custom Walnut Pizza Peel

The request for this pizza peel/paddle comes from the the heartland of the Midwest, Lee's Summit, Missouri and is being created as a birthday present for the clients father.

This peel is being made out of 1/2 inch thick dark walnut and is 15 1/2 inches wide by 16 inches tall, with the overall length being 32 inches. A hole was drilled in the top end of the handle and a leather strip was tied in so the peel could be hung up. The front edge has a 3 inch bevel to be able to work with the pizza. It was engraved with an Epilog laser using Occidental font.

This custom peel is is coated with a food grade mineral oil finish which we recommend for all of our peels.

Custom 32" Pizza Peel Shaped Chalk Board - UPDATE

Most pizza peels are created to actually make pizza's, however this one is painted with a special chalk board paint and will be used as a menu specials board.

As in all my peels this one is made out of local birch. It measures in with a 32 inch round bottom and a two foot handle. Typically the handle is made with a thicker board to help handle the weight of the larger pizza. For this one being as it will be hung on the wall, I have made the entire board 3/8 inches thick.

Custom Interlocking Wedding Rings Cribbage Board

Using the interlocking wedding rings image somehow being incorporated in the design was the idea of this client from Minnesota. It all started with the below photo she shared with me. I took it from there and I think the end result came out well. This board will be given as a wedding present to her new husband on their wedding day.

This custom two person box style cribbage board was created of dark walnut and measured in at 18 inches long, 10 inches wide, and 2 1/2 inches thick. Inside the bottom section I created storage pockets for stowing the custom pegs and cards along with a personal lasered quote.

This awesome cribbage board is now on its way to its new home in time for their big day. Best of wishes and 29's to this lucky couple.

Custom Six Person Walnut Cribbage Board with Carved Loon

This custom cribbage board is soon to be headed to Saskatchewan Canada where many games of cribbage will be played on it.

Per clients request I used dark walnut to create this large custom board. It is a six player board and measures in at 18 inches wide x 32 inches long and is around one inch thick. There is a slot put in the back for peg storage.

The client also asked for a silhouette of a loon and the number at the 30, 60, 90 and 120 points on the board, with the other points numbered every 5 holes. You will also notice the skunk silhouette after the 90 point.

The board is titled "Bill's Board" with "You gotta pay to play" at the bottom of the board. I can see some very spirited games being played on this board.

The larger carving in the center is of a Loon and was done using a 3-D CNC router system. I think it really adds to the elegance of this custom cribbage board. It is recessed and surrounded by an elliptical shape to simulate water. It really came out nice!

This custom cribbage was created from the bottom photo for a client to give as a birthday gift. It will soon be sailing off to Connecticut.

It was created out of hard Maple and is 9 inches wide x 20 inches long.

Custom Pizza Serving Trays

These boards were created for a pizzeria in New Jersey. The various size circles will go into a metal tray to place the pizza's on while being cut and served. The larger circles are 22 inches in diameter and the smaller ones are 18 inches.

These boards are made out of 3/8 inch thick birch and coated with a wood grade mineral oil.

Many fish stories will be told over this custom cribbage board. It was created out of Hard Maple and is 10 inches wide and 23 inches long. As with all cribbage boards there is a slot in the back for storage of the custom metal pegs which are included with each custom board.

Boards measure in at 5/8 inch thick, 23 7/8 inches wide and 22 1/8 inches long and were created using hard maple. The breadboard ends are always added for stability in keeping these wide boards flat.

This request came in looking for a custom birthday present. They wanted to somehow connect it to the Oregon State Beavers football team, which was a favorite of the birthday guy. The school logo has a copywrite, so I contacted the person in charge at Oregon State and got a one time use permission for this project. This is the outcome of a few hours of work and the creation of a cribbage board which will surely become a family heirloom.

The board is around 1 inch thick, 16 inches wide and 20 inches long and was made out of hard maple. The layout was created using CoralDraw, Then the cutout and drilling was done using a Shopbot CNC router system.
The logo and the lettering on back was done using a Epilog laser system.

Custom Mahogany and Walnut Pizza Peel

This request came from North Carolina asking me to create a custom peel. They chose the Walnut center with the Mahogany sides. Final dimensions were 16 inch square paddle with a nine inch handle. Included with a leather strap in the handle for hanging or displaying.

Their request also included the laser engraved letter C in the center of the paddle.

This combination of woods goes together nicely and creates a very nice end product.

This request was from a client in Pennsylvania. They wanted an elegant way of serving their customers. This prototype is now on its way to its new owner for their approval.

I used dark walnut to create this peel. It was designed to serve a 10 inch pizza on a 10 1/2 inch space with a 6 inch handle and around 3/8 inch thick. As with all my peels it was finished using a food grade mineral oil to enhance the grain and to preserve the wood.

I used an Epilog laser system to laser engrave the business on the handle.

This is the finished project. It was created out of hard maple and was 24 inches long, 8 inches wide and 4/4 inch thick. I used a hand rubbed polyurethane for the finish. A set of custom metal pegs and a new deck of cards went this new board.

Using CorelDraw, I created the outline and the track layout. This is what I came up with,

The car layout was a bit hard because of the angle of the photo I was provided, however I think it gets the point across and was approved by the client.

With this request came this photo of their 1974 Corvette. They wanted a custom cribbage board to be made out of the shape of the car,

It is a custom piece created to display elegance and beauty. I think the Bloodwood inlay into the Bolivian Rosewood creates the exact image we were trying for.

The finished custom two person cribbage board is on its way to Colorado. The photo did not come out real clear in this photo, but it did turn out. The photo and lettering were done using a Epilog laser system. and was done by Northern Lights Engraving in Columbia Falls, Montana.

Here is the mock up layout I did using CorelDraw. This board was made out of 4/4 inch Maple and was roughly 8 inches wide and 18 inches long. There is a slot on the back for holding the custom metal pegs.
The appropriate skunk lines were also engraved into the board.

This request came from Colorado and this is the photo they wanted lasered onto their new cribbage board. This photo is really busy, but I think it will turn out good.

Custom Oregon shaped Cribbage Board with lasered Elk

I was contacted by a client in Oregon about a cribbage board for her husband. She had two requests, she wanted an Elk and she wanted the shape to be in the shape of Oregon.

The Elk she found and liked online was a drawing done by Dennis McGraw. I told her, as I always tell these type of requests. It is a copywrited image, we must get permission to use it. She agreed completely. I called the number on his website explaining the situation. Typically, I do not hear back from these type of inquiries. Imagine my surprise when I got a return call from Dennis graciously agreeing to let us use his image for this project.

The next step was to create the shape of Oregon State along with a four person track.

It was made out of a piece of 4/4 Hard Maple.
Once the shape was cut was done and the holes were drilled we were ready to laser the Elk.

Here is the finished project, it really turned out nice. I think her husband will be thrilled on Christmas morning.

Splinters Woodworks Shop Expansion

Finally I have put together a short presentation of the shop expansion project. It is my first video so bear with me. : ) Enjoy!!

It has been a wild ride this past year.... The shop expansion was closed in last summer during a very busy year for orders and shows and is still working towards completion. I have saddled up the horses for another ride....(ok ...I really don't have any horses, but the equipment has been cleaned and warmed up and getting accustomed to their new space)....I still have a lot to do to finish the shop, but then it is possible that changes and upgrades will never end...at least I hope so...

The following video is comprised of a set of photos I took during the building process. I have had several requests for me to post it, but due to work load have been unable to put anything together until now. Now that it is winter and the pace has slowed a little bit, I have put them into a video format to share with you.
It is so nice to have a shop where all of my equipment has a spot and I now have a separate finish room as well as a office space.

Glacier National Park Centennial Plaques

This plaque was created and presented to Glacier National Park at the 100th birthday Centennial celebration. It now hangs in the front lobby of Glacier National Parks headquarters.

In addition to the above big plaque I also created 120 or so smaller plaques which were presented to various volunteers and committee members for their help in making this a successful celebration.

These plaques were made out of a local harvested Birch.

It was a privilege to have been a part of this celebration. Thanks for asking me.

Custom 28 inch Birch Pizza Peel

This request came from the east coast for a pizzeria there. It is being made out of birch.

Here is how the whole process begins. Once the boards are prepared they are glued up and clamped. The clamps and cross boards are used to ensure it stays flat while the glue is drying.

The clamps and boards have now been removed and the scraping, sanding and shaping will begins

I place the peel in the vise to shape the handle and edges.

Another completed custom pizza peel is completed and on its way to its new home...

Custom Walnut - Mahagany pizza peels

I was contacted by a client who is working in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He wanted a couple custom pizza peels to use with his portable pizza oven.
He chose to make out of Walnut/Mahogany, with one being 12.5" wide and the other one 14.5" wide each with additional 2 feet for the handle.

Wood selection was made and the process begins.

The clamps are now off and the scraping, shaping, & sanding begins.

These two woods should go well together and when oiled will look very nice. Sometimes you don't know until that first coat of food grade mineral oil is applied.

Here is the finished products. They really came out nice, he will have a hard time using these to cook on.

Custom Long handled Birch pizza peel

Here is the rough layout of the birch I chose for this project.
The top of the handle will have a canoe paddle end shape.

This custom pizza peel was made for a client to give as a Christmas gift. It is on its way to Park City, Utah to be used in a wood fired pizza oven.

It was made out of local birch and has a four foot handle on a 12 inch round paddle for total length of 5 feet..

They wanted laser engraving into the handle. Because of the length, I had to figure out a way to make that work.

So the answer we came up with was to engrave on a separate piece of contrasting birch that would fit the laser printer(18") and inlay it into the handle.

The client was pleased that it came out very well.

Custom Cribbage Board Maple/w/ bloodwood and steel

This order is a present for the clients dad who just retired from a job as a metalworker. It will be a four person board with special inlays.

The main board will be made out of hard maple and have a 3/4 strip of blood wood run down the long ways with a 3/4 inch strip of steel going across the width.

This is the drawing I came up with using CorelDraw and the clients preferences.

This is the steel strip which the client made to be inlayed into the board.

My client wanted this to be a special board and asked to combine wood and metal into this board design. They designed and created the metal strip for me to be inlayed into the board.

This was the first layout with the bloodwood, steel inlay strip and track layout...

Now to drill the holes and layout the dado's for the inlays.

The dado's have been cut and the strip put in place.

Spalted Maple Table Top Cribbage Board

This finished project was a combined effort. I was contacted by a cabinet shop in Ontario, Canada:

Thus the project began ending with these photos and comments from the family that placed the order.

This project was a true show of combined craftsman workmanship, while being far apart, crossing borders, and never meeting each other.

I am very pleased with the outcome and feel privileged to have been a part of it.

Overall panel size was 16 inches wide x 30 inches long, to be encased in a three inch wide border.

The Cribbage board layout is 10 inches wide x 24 inches long
with a 1 inch lip all the way around for the panel joint.
Pegs holes are 3/16 inch to accommodate the over sized custom metal pegs for this board.

Initial layout I created using CorelDraw. I then will use a CNC router to drill the holes and create the lines between each track.

Custom Four Leaf Clover Cribbage Board

Creating this layout was fun, and I decided on placing a street on each of the four leafs. The layout and hole pattern was created using CoralDraw and then cutout using a Shopbot CNC router system.

This two person board has really came out well and will go as a present for a client to his wife.

It is made out of hard maple and is roughly 13 inches square. There is a slot on the back to store the custom metal pegs when not in use.

PIzza boards for Orso Alaska

The order was for a pizza serving board. Here I created two boards, one out of dark walnut, and one out of hard maple.
They were shipped to the client and they will make a decision on which type they want.
The boards are 7 inches wide, 14 inches long, and 3/4 inches thick.
The edges were all rounded over and sanded smooth, then coated with a food grade mineral oil for preservation.

Surprise.....a new game

The surprise game board is being created for a client in Southern California. It will be played a bit like cribbage with variations (I think).

They have not come up with a name for their game yet. The blank area below the finish hole will be where we laser it once they arrive at a name.

The board has been shipped and the client liked it a lot. They now will work on a marketing ploy.
Their goal is to have me manufacture this board for them.

We will see how it goes...

Here are the two back slots created to hold the large amount of pegs required for this game.

Finally...we believe the surprise game board is nearing production. Here is the prototype I will ship to the client for their final decision on the product.

It was cut out of native birch and is 13 3/4 inches long, 6 3/4 inches wide, and 1 inch thick.

This is a major changes in the design...The board is being cut and drilled currently and should be ready for the client to start showing it around to create interest.

This is a new board game that was designed by a client in southern California. I created this using very specific guidelines from the designer.

Custom Cheese boards for Henry Public in Brooklyn, New York

These custom cheese boards will be used in Henry Public in Brooklyn, NY. The first photo is the prototype I sent to them to see if they needed to change anything.

These boards are made out of dark walnut and are roughly 6 inches wide x 9 inches long with a 2 1/2 inch handle.

Walnut is especially notorious for each board being totally different in grain pattern and color of wood. However, it is always beautiful.

Three days later here is the result of the first prototype; nine more boards.

Here are the nine boards oiled and ready for leather handle straps and the packing box...

Custom Travel Size Cribbage Boards

For those of you who follow this blog you know that I have been working on this design for a while. It has been a real trial and error, but I think we are finally getting closer.

This board has a space for a clients choice of photo or logo. Here I used the Centennial logo for Glacier National Park.

It is a folding travel board for travelers, hikers, or just folks who don't have a lot of space.

With this model I used native pine, but this project could be made out of any wood you would like.

Inside we have the space to store the custom metal pegs and a deck of cards.

There are two strong earth magnets being used to hold the box together once it is closed for travel.
