Custom Yarn Bowl

Yarn Bowl in action..... Thanks for sharing photo...

This custom yarn bowl was created as a Christmas present.  It was made out of a rough chunk of cherry I had been given.  One never knows the beauty of what lies below the bark on rough wood.

It measures in finished at 29 inches in circumference, 9 inches in diameter and 3 1/2 inches in height.

The finish was a combo mixture of linseed oil, hand rubbed poly, and Tung oil. It provides a durable pleasing finish.

For those of you asking yourself   "What is a yarn bowl?"

The side of the bowl which has the J slot is where you can place your yarn while you are working on a project. Use hand wound balls or any other type. First place the yarn in the bowl and then string it through the slit, feeding it through as you do your project. If you have a larger ball, set it on the side and use it the same way. The bowl is glossy and smooth so the ball will roll around and won't get stuck inside
.

So now you know....   :-)

And now the sanding begins on the slot.

The center point is drilled out first.  Then using a round blade the slot is s-l-o-w-l-y cut out

While still on the lathe the J is penciled in where I want it and then hand carved out.

The bowl shape is done, top view

Then we slice it in half and round off the corners and it is ready to go on to the lathe..
It all starts with a piece of rough cherry, looking at the end view before being cut in half.
